Through the lens: A NYC nightlight
product design & product development
Through the Lens is a nightlight I created in the shell of a Canon PowerShot digital camera. It plays with the idea of using interchangeable acrylic slides to showcase various images representing New York City through the 1900s.
This concept was developed in response to the prompt of making a lamp in my third year Product Design studio at CU Boulder. I wanted to combine my love of vintage aesthetics and the history of one of my favorite places— Manhattan, NY.

Storage mechanism
Clear acrylic holding systems to go along with each nightlight. Made to store and display photo slides in an aesthetic fashion that makes them easily accessible for the user to store and interchange.
Acrylic pieces designed on Rhino and laser cut by me, then assembled. Text also designed on Rhino and etched into acrylic with laser.
I printed each photo onto translucent adhesive sheets and stuck each onto 2.5” x 3” clear acrylic slides, which I programmed on Rhino and laser cut.
Both b&w and colored slides created and pictured, further playing into the vintage aesthetic I set for this project.
Though the pictured sets of photos are themed around NYC, this concept could apply to many other topics and interests. For example, people could request for their favorite photos to be printed onto the slides, which is definitely something I kept in mind as a future possibility while designing the NYC version.
If this is something you’re interested in, please contact me and I would be happy to discuss customized options and requests for orders. :)
